What is a Barn Quilt?
A quilt pattern painted on a square piece of wood. They are traditionally seen in very large sizes, such as 8’ x 8’, but we like to keep them much smaller.
Does a barn quilt have to hang on a barn? Absolutely not! They incorporate into any home decor, porch, or outdoor space.
The modern barn quilt movement was started in rural Ohio by Donna Sue Groves. Large barn quilts were hung on barns as a way to bring visitors to the countryside in Adams County, Ohio. Donna Sue sparked an interest in neighboring counties, and more barn quilt trails were begain. Donna Sue traveled to Iowa to introduce the concept; each year more and more trails were created, then to Kentucky and Tennessee. Currently there are 48 states with barn quilt trails, in addition to Canada. Over 7000 barn quilts are part of the organized trails, with dozens more waiting to be discovered.
